We have had a blast following Mikayla on her journey to becoming a Mechanical Engineer, and can't wait to see where her program and degree takes her. So, for her final post, we asked her to leave us with some parting words:
Parting Words
In my experience at college, I was the only female in my engineering-based classes. However, when I entered my mechanical engineering internship, I saw a ton of women in management positions and as design engineers. It makes me happy to see women thriving in a field dominated by men, and it gives me hope that in the future more girls can be encouraged to get involved in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This is a picture of a 3D printed BB-8 that I made in high school. In my classes, there were not a lot of students in general because I went to a community college first. For example, in my engineering design class, there was a total of 6 students. As I transitioned out of my general education classes (chemistry, calculus physics English, etc.) I noticed the declining number of students in science and technology classes. In my engineering classes, I could see the number of students in each class decline as people dropped out due to the amount of pressure and workload engineering requires. Someone told me that engineering is a competitive industry, but that is simply not true. There are always technology companies looking for young engineers to bring aboard. As far as parting words go, I can say that I have no regrets when it comes to the paths I took to get where I am today. Community college allowed me to mature and gain experience in the engineering field, and now I feel like I am ready for the next biggest challenge.Follow along with our students progress here.Learn more about the Generation T movement here.
